5-Letter Words With the Most Vowels

The 5-letter words with the most vowels have four, and our dictionary contains exactly ten of them: ADIEU, AERIE, AURAE, COOEE, EERIE, EIRIE, EOZOA, OOZOA, QUEUE and RAIAE. None of the 6,437 five-letter words in our database has five vowels. For everyday word games the practical ceiling is three, and 47 common 5-letter words reach it, from ABOUT to VOICE.

All figures here come from MyWordSolver’s own word database, built on the 1913 Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary. “Common” means the word also appears on a list of the 3,000 most common English words. We count A, E, I, O and U as vowels; Y gets its own section below.

All 5-letter words with four vowels

Here is the complete list. The “different vowels” column matters for word games: a word that repeats a vowel tests fewer letters.

Word Vowels Different vowels Meaning or note
ADIEU A, I, E, U 4 Goodbye; borrowed from French
AERIE A, E, I, E 3 An eagle’s nest built high on a cliff; also spelled eyrie
AURAE A, U, A, E 3 A Latin plural of aura
COOEE O, O, E, E 2 A long, high call used to attract attention, first used in Australia
EERIE E, E, I, E 2 Strange in a way that unsettles you
EIRIE E, I, I, E 2 An old spelling of aerie
EOZOA E, O, O, A 3 An old zoological term (the ending -zoa means “animals”)
OOZOA O, O, O, A 2 Another old zoological term
QUEUE U, E, U, E 2 A line of people waiting; once also a braided pigtail
RAIAE A, I, A, E 3 Plural of raia, an old name for a ray or skate

A few things stand out:

  • ADIEU is the only one that tests four different vowels. Every other word repeats at least one.
  • QUEUE has just one consonant, and it’s Q. Drop the last four letters and it still sounds the same.
  • Half the list is obscure. EIRIE, EOZOA, OOZOA, RAIAE and AURAE live mostly in old dictionaries and scientific writing. ADIEU, AERIE, EERIE and QUEUE are the ones you’ll actually meet.
  • AUDIO isn’t here. It has four vowels too, but it came into use as a standalone word in the 20th century, so it isn’t an entry in the 1913 Webster’s.

Is ADIEU a good Wordle opener?

ADIEU is a popular first guess because it checks four vowels at once. Measured by letter frequency, though, it isn’t the strongest. Across our 6,437 five-letter words, the letters of ADIEU average 1.57 matches against a word picked at random. ARISE averages 1.82. The difference comes from D and U, which are much less common than R and S.

Here is how often each vowel (and Y) shows up in 5-letter words:

Letter 5-letter words containing it Share
E 3,177 49.4%
A 2,704 42.0%
O 1,865 29.0%
I 1,807 28.1%
U 1,259 19.6%
Y 1,078 16.7%

E and A are in a huge share of words, O edges out I, and U trails well behind. That’s why ARISE, which already holds three vowels, beats ADIEU: it swaps the weak U and D for the strong R and S. Common 5-letter words with three vowels

We checked the 472 five-letter words in our dictionary that also appear on the 3,000-common-words list. None has four vowels and none has zero. 47 have three. One of those, Asian, is normally capitalized, so it’s left out below.

The 33 words that test three different vowels are the most useful, so here they are grouped by the vowels they check:

Vowels tested Words Count
A, E, I alive, arise, aside, ideal, image, media, raise 7
A, E, U abuse, argue, cause, equal, pause, sauce, value 7
E, I, U guide, issue, juice, quiet, quite 5
E, O, U house, mouse, quote, route 4
A, E, O above, alone, ocean 3
A, I, O avoid, piano, ratio 3
E, I, O noise, voice 2
A, O, U about 1
I, O, U union 1

No common 5-letter word tests four different vowels, so covering all five takes two guesses. ARISE followed by ABOUT or HOUSE does it, and so does OCEAN followed by GUIDE.

Three vowels, two different

These 13 common words also have three vowels but repeat one of them:

  • A and E: agree, ahead, aware, eager, leave, peace
  • E and I: elite, piece, seize
  • A and I: again
  • E and O: loose
  • I and O: onion
  • A and U: usual

They make poor first guesses but useful late ones: once you know a word has, say, two E’s, PEACE, LEAVE or AGREE might be exactly what you need. Our pages for 5-letter words whose 2nd and 4th letters are E and 5-letter words with E as the 2nd and 5th letter list more of these patterns.

How many vowels does a typical 5-letter word have?

Among the 472 common 5-letter words, the vowel count breaks down like this:

Vowels (A, E, I, O, U) Common 5-letter words Share
0 0 0%
1 125 26.5%
2 300 63.6%
3 47 10.0%
4 or more 0 0%

Nearly two out of three common 5-letter words have exactly two vowels, and every one of them has at least one.

Why vowel-heavy guesses help, and when they stop helping

They find the word’s skeleton

Since every common 5-letter word has a vowel and most have two, locating the vowels early tells you the shape of the answer. A yellow A and a green E at the end already rule out most of the list. Position helps too: A is the most common 2nd and 3rd letter in our 5-letter words, and E is the most common 4th and 5th letter. Lists such as 5-letter words with A as the 2nd and 4th letter let you test those spots directly.

They test U cheaply

U appears in about one word in five. Rather than spending a guess on it alone, words like ABOUT, HOUSE, QUIET and VALUE check U alongside two other vowels.

They stop paying off once the vowels are known

After a guess or two, more vowels just waste slots. Switch to consonant-heavy words. 125 of the common 5-letter words have a single vowel, including BLIND, CHART, DRINK, FRESH, NIGHT, STRIP, TRUCK and WORLD. Pick ones with five different letters; our list of 5-letter words with no repeating letters is a good place to look.

What about Y?

Y appears in 1,078 of our 5-letter words (16.7%), and it’s the second most common last letter after E, ending 782 of them. 44 of the 472 common 5-letter words contain Y, among them EARLY, HAPPY, STORY and YOUTH. In every one of those, Y sits alongside at least one of A, E, I, O or U.

Outside the common list it’s a different story. Words such as CRYPT, LYMPH and NYMPH manage with Y alone, and one Welsh borrowing does without Y as well. You’ll find them all in our guide to words with no vowels.
